Emils Deli Downtown is closed. thank you for your patronage.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A 50-year-old family business downtown is coming to a close.
Emil’s Deli, located in the basement of the U.S. Bank building on Third Street SE, first opened in 1964.
The floods of 2008 washed away everything the deli once had, but customers helped with the reopening a year later by replacing lost Hawkeye decorations.
Now with owner Dave Allick retiring at the end of June, the restaurant will permanently close.
Allick says the end is bittersweet.
“It’s going to be tough to leave, just because it’s kind of my life. I spend more time on my weekends getting ready for the next week than I do spending it with my family,” he said.
Allick says he’s thankful for the deli’s loyal customers and the memories. His family has also shown its dedication to his job.
“The boys have grown up here in the deli, and it’s been a part of their lives,” he said.
He plans to help his sons continue the restaurant business at their other locations after retiring.
“I won’t be a couch potato,” he said.
The deli’s last day is June 27.
